A while ago I wrote about the fabulous owl floor lamp from designer Rick Lee. I couldn't swing it (despite Rick's generous offer of financial aid).
Here's the poor woman's placeholder - this owl table lamp from Modern Dose. If I wasn't sure that one of my children would instantly knock it over (I feel safe saying this even before the second child has arrived - it's as if I already know him...), I'd get this for the kids' rooms immediately.

I was searching for the best price on the Mixko Delight Light. It's a great pendant. It's felt, which is certainly unusual, and has these lovely butterfly cutouts. And it forces you to be energy-savvy - use anything stronger than a 15 watt compact florescent bulb and the felt will burn.
I found the light for $89 one place, then for $161 at Rose and Radish (which usually runs a little expensive, but jeez!). Finally, stumbled across the lowest price I could find - $85 at 2Jane.com. Okay, that's great.
While I'm on 2Jane I also got excited when I noticed they they carry my beloved
Mibo pendant shades. And while I don't remember what exactly I paid for mine, it was probably around $92, which is what Design Public charges. Not bad - but at 2Jane, they're $76!! Wow. Oh, wait, they charge separately for the ceiling fixture. When you add that $16, voila, you get $92. And Design Public's selling the whole kit and kaboodle at that same price, so I guess not so exciting after all. In fact, I'll take away points from 2Jane for selling those things separately, seems sort of sneaky.
But I still love the great price on that Delight light. You're still in my good graces, Jane.

I saw this stunning floor lamp in last Thursday's LA Times HOME section and fell immediately in love.
Sadly, I can't really qualify Rick Lee's Night Owl floor lamp as a design deal, but it is definitely a work of art. And $1995 for a work of art ain't so bad, right?
Rick is a San Francisco-based designer who tells me:
The Owl lamp is a limited edition design, the Owl being 3-d printed in polyamide. Limited edition of 100 only and all signed by the artist. It is currently available only [through] our gallery or New York. SFMOMA has already sold off their [edition] last month. The retail price is at $1,995.

Oh, I wish I could justify it. But the counter stools and finally caving in on a flat screen have definitely removed any sort of fabulous floor lamp budget I might have imagined. But I will stay up late at night thinking about it...
