So right now I have what I think is a great little secret lying on my living room floor. The Fakse rug from IKEA has a number of things going for it. First, the texture - it's woven from pieces of suede, which is soft but more interesting from a tactile perspective than traditional wool. It's remarkably resilient - I've used this rug not only in my home (dog, cat, 3-year-old) but also in an office. You'd think, given it's cool & light grey color that it would be a mess in no time, but it holds up. Really, really well. Finally, it's a good looking 4' x 6' rug for $100. What could be better?
Well, the only problem is that I want something else in my living room. And pretty much ever since we moved into the house in mid-05, I've been on the hunt. The fact is I may never replace it b/c I enjoy the hunt so much, but I can save that issue for therapy. In the meantime, I'll present a few of the alternatives that have caught my eye lately.

According to the LA Times Home section today, Sueno Studios is running a sale this week. Sale prices aren't reflected on their website, but this rug may make it worth a phone call (213.483.7300) to learn more.
I love the color blocking - and these colors would work perfectly in my house (probably yours too - we're really looking at the colors of wood and concrete - hard not to like if you dig modern design). I also like the flat weave, which would be great in my living room (ours is not a lounge about on the floor sort of space - we have that in another room).
And while not nearly the deal of the Fakse IKEA rug, $750 seems like a great deal for a unique handwoven 100% wool design. There are other great rugs there, too - take a look in the "Rugs" (duh) section.
Finally - one I've loved for a long time but haven't yet pulled the trigger on...I know the zebra thing has been beaten badly over the last two years, but I still love Jonathan Adler's typically tongue-in-cheek take. It's flatweave wool that's zebra-like - but cruelty-free. They key thing with Adler's rugs is that you can make them in any mix of his phenomenal palette you'd like. I just saw this in a baby girl's room in hot pink and white, which looked great, but I may snag the in-stock brown & natural version for my house. It's a little larger than the other two at 5' x 7', and brings perfect zing to my otherwise perfectly cool and modern setting. Less of a deal, but I could probably swing the $875. I promise I'll love it forever...
